RELEASE: Texas Democrats Applaud Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Sensible Decision to Pull the Plug on Greg Abbott, Dan Patrick, and James Dickey’s Reckless Plan to Hold an In-Person Convention

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“The Texas Democratic Party applauds hospitality workers, Mayor Turner, and the Houston City Council for making the safe, sensible decision to cancel the reckless in-person Texas Republican Convention. Texas is currently experiencing an uncontrolled surge in coronavirus cases due to the utter failure of Republican leadership at the federal and state levels. Going through with this in-person convention would have been catastrophic and led to even more cases and deaths.

“Public health and safety are paramount right now, along with the safety of our hospitality workers, who would have been forced to go through with this convention at clear risk to their health and livelihood.

“Republicans are lucky that Democratic and city leaders were willing to do the right thing, cancel this convention, and save them from themselves. They won’t be lucky in November when Texans remember exactly who was willing to put them at-risk and who still, four months later, refuses to proactively fight the coronavirus pandemic.”
