Austin, TX — Once again, Republican Lt. Governor Dan Patrick stalled the passage of common-sense marijuana reform (HB 63). This comes after the Texas House approved the legislation with a supermajority. HB 63 would make possession of a small amount of marijuana a civil fine of $250 and would eliminate the criminal offense in these cases.
Texas Democratic Party Communications Director Abhi Rahman issued the following statement:
“The majority of Texans agree that it is long past time to decriminalize cannabis. It’s time for Dan Patrick to stop stalling on this common-sense marijuana reform.
“The Texas Democratic Party supports the decriminalization and legalization of marijuana, period. Too many Texans are arrested and sit in prison each year for possession of small amounts of marijuana. Our community law enforcement resources should be focusing on violent crime, not simple marijuana possession.
“The clock is ticking. It’s time to pass common-sense marijuana reform.”
