RELEASE: In the Middle of a Global Pandemic, Indicted Attorney General Ken Paxton’s Lawsuit to Repeal the Affordable Care Act Heads to the Supreme Court

Every Texas Republican Has to Answer to Paxton’s Lawsuit

Austin, TX — Today, led by indicted Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, Republicans filed briefs to repeal the Affordable Care Act in the middle of the worst pandemic in American history.

If Republicans are successful, more than 24 million Americans and nearly 2 million Texans will lose health insurance. More than 10.7 million Texans with preexisting conditions also stand to lose protections if Paxton, Trump, and other Texas Republicans are successful.

Every Republican on the ballot, from Donald Trump to John Cornyn to Republican state house candidates, must answer to Paxton’s attempt to strip healthcare protections away in the middle of the worst pandemic in centuries.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“In the middle of a global pandemic, Texas Trump Republicans, like indicted Attorney General Ken Paxton, continue their attacks on the Affordable Care Act. For millions of Texans, the law has never been as important as it is now.

“If Republicans are successful, nearly 2 million Texans will lose healthcare coverage. That is unacceptable and flat out wrong. The Affordable Care Act has guaranteed health care coverage for more than 20 million Americans and ensured that the 10.7 million Texans living with a preexisting condition cannot be unlawfully discriminated against.

“We should be fighting to protect and expand healthcare for all, not cutting off access for millions of people. Texas already ranks dead last in healthcare coverage. Texas has seen 13 straight days of rising coronavirus hospitalizations and more than 10,000 cases over the last two days. Healthcare is more essential now than ever. Texas Democrats will continue to fight relentlessly for Texas families.”
