Austin, TX — Today, Vice President Mike Pence and his favorite Texas lapdog John Cornyn are bringing cameras, spin, and propaganda to border facilities holding children in inhumane conditions across southern Texas.
Not only do Pence and Cornyn refuse to acknowledge these cruelties but they are both major parts of the reason why we are seeing the conditions that we see at the border today.
Don’t believe us? Take a look at Cornyn and Pence’s similar rhetoric and record when it comes to the border:
June 30, 2019: Pence said it’s “morally wrong” to work with Democrats to pass comprehensive immigration reform
April 11, 2019: Pence says walls work
“Walls work. You all know that better than anyone,” he told the agents, adding that the administration also was looking at ways to fill staffing shortages within Customs and Border Protection and Border Patrol and modernize ports of entry.
February 17, 2018: Pence falsely claims Border Control apprehends 7 terrorists a day at the southern border — Rated “Pants on Fire” by Politifact
“We’ve made progress but we still have work to do,” Pence said. According to the White House transcript, Pence went on: “I learned yesterday at the Hidalgo border center that along the southern border of the United States, we actually still apprehend 1,100 individuals a day, who are attempting to enter this country illegally, including seven individuals a day who are either known or suspected terrorists.”
July 6, 2018: Pence says Central American immigrants think they can ignore the law
“[many immigrants] are making the journey seeking economic opportunity, driven by the misguided belief that they can ignore the laws of the United States and enter our nation without consequences.”
June 18, 2018: Cornyn endorsed the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” prosecution policy, the one thing singularly responsible for the recent spike in migrant family separations at the border.
March 1, 2019: Cornyn on if there is a Humanitarian Crisis at the Border — “I think I’ll leave for others the effort to try to distinguish between an emergency and a humanitarian crisis; I don’t see any difference.”
June 24, 2019: In one of the most disgusting actions taken by any Senator this year, John Cornyn commented on the death of a woman and three small children tweeting “Sadly, this is what happens when infants are used as a ticket to enter the US due to arcane laws. Inaction is not an option.”
And the kicker:
July 9, 2019: It was reported that John Cornyn took at least $40,000 in PAC money from the private immigration detention industry, including $10,000 from GEO Group, which operates detention centers for ICE in Conroe, Del Rio, Karnes City, Laredo, Pearsall and Robstown.
