Worst Governor in Modern Texas History
Austin, TX — Today, Texas announced that more than 10,000 new people have contracted the coronavirus and 60 Texans died from the virus, both all-time highs.
Meanwhile, ICUs in major Texas cities are nearing capacity, and doctors are forced to choose between which patients get a bed.
America is more than four months into this crisis, yet we are still hitting record highs of new cases because of Greg Abbott’s mismanagement. The coronavirus crisis is worse than ever.
From day one of this crisis, Abbott refused to take the lead and mandate common-sense policies to stop the spread of coronavirus. He failed to deliver the widespread testing and contact tracing we needed. He was late to implement safe social distancing policies. He passed off responsibility when it was politically convenient. Now, Abbott expects local leaders to navigate this crisis in the dark without the resources they need. He puts Texans at risk, against the guidelines of the CDC, White House, or even members of his own task force. He listened to his wealthy donors and lobbyists over experts and medical professionals. He continued to prematurely lift safety precautions and ignore the data and doctors and experts who told him that his actions would lead to a second wave.
Finally, he refused—until forced—to mandate common-sense mask strategies and still fails to give any concrete policy prescriptions for the rising coronavirus cases across our state. He put the health and economic well-being of our state last. Texans continue to suffer as a result.
Our families are suffering because of Governor Abbott’s failure of leadership.
Texas Democratic Party Communications Director Abhi Rahman issued the following statement:
“Republican Governor Abbott’s failed coronavirus response has led to a record surge in new infections and deaths in Texas.
“It didn’t have to be this bad. From day one of this crisis, Abbott has undermined, hid, and outright refused to listen to science or doctors. There were over 10,000 new cases today, 60 Texans who died today, and at least 2.7 million Texans who remain unemployed. This is because Greg Abbott put the health and economic well-being of our state last. Texans continue to suffer as a result.
“Greg Abbott is the worst governor in modern Texas history.”
