AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Democrats continue to make their stand in D.C. — resisting voting rights attacks from Texas Republicans and growing a massive coalition calling for urgent voting rights protections. Today, Texas House Democrats in D.C. are holding further meetings with advocates and key voices in the fight for voting rights.
On the third day of Texas Democrats’ voting rights convention, hosted alongside Mi Familia Vota and SEIU Texas, the delegation is meeting with a broad swath of state-level leaders from across the country, on topics ranging from ensuring secure and accessible elections, to building power for voters at the state level. Texas House Democrats will also meet today with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, House Democratic Caucus Chair Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, and Crystal Mason, a Texan who was convicted of voting illegally and given a five-year prison sentence for casting a provisional ballot while on supervised release from a federal conviction — when she did not know she was ineligible to vote under Texas law. The delegation will also participate in a public conference call alongside Senator Cory Booker at 3 PM ET / 2 PM CT (media can RSVP here), and will hold a media availability after their meeting with Crystal Mason, at 6:30 ET / 5:30 CT (media can RSVP here).
At home in Texas, Texas Senate Democrats are also continuing the fight, and keeping voting rights at the forefront of the statewide conversation. Today, members of the Texas Senate Democratic Caucus held a press event at the State Capitol on their work to advocate for voting rights protections. The event can be found here.
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“With every day that passes, Texas Democrats are growing a stronger and stronger coalition, and moving the dial in the national conversation on the urgent need for voting rights. I continue to be profoundly grateful to our Texas Democratic fighters, both in D.C. and at home in Texas, who are championing the cornerstone of our democracy: our constitutional right to vote.
“Texas Democrats and our partners all across the country are fighting with everything we’ve got to keep American democracy intact, and ensure every eligible voter can make their voice heard. Our lawmakers are rallying our leaders in D.C. to find a solution that will protect voting rights and keep the power in the hands of the people. As Republicans around the country continue to attack our most basic constitutional right, we will continue to meet the moment with the urgency it demands — and fight with everything we’ve got to put an end to these attacks on our right to vote.”
