Chairman Hinojosa Releases Statement on Texas Abortion Ban “Trigger Law” Taking Effect
AUSTIN, Texas -- Today, Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa released the following statement on the Texas abortion ban “trigger law” taking effect today:
“Today is a gut-wrenchingly sad day for our great state.
“The extremist Republicans leading Texas are finally able to see the poisoned fruit of their labor: a state where a doctor can be criminally prosecuted with a life sentence in prison for providing care to their patients.
“A state where everyone is living in constant fear that they may be the next ones whose lives are upended by an unwanted pregnancy or a tragic miscarriage.
“A state where a teenage girl has to find the money, time, and support to travel hundreds of miles to another part of the country – just to seek life-saving healthcare after being raped by a family member.
“Forced birth – and draconian, medieval control over women’s bodies – has always been the goal. Nothing about this is ‘pro-life.’ Nothing about this is compassionate.
“If you, like me, feel simultaneously nauseous and full of intense rage – I implore you: turn these feelings into action.
“We can, and must, and will, defeat the far-right ideologues who have taken this state hostage. We can stop this runaway train. But we can only do it if we do the work necessary.
“In these final 75 days until the election, let’s do the work. For the future of Texas, let’s do the damn work.”
