Last Week Wasn’t Enough — Texas Republicans Keep Pushing Death Penalty for Women Who Get Abortions

Austin, TX — Texas Republicans on the House Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee this week are pushing a bill that would make legal abortions criminally punishable by death for women who receive abortion care with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the mother’s health. [HB 896, April 8, 2019]

This comes only a week after CSHB 2350, legislation that originally made legal abortions punishable by death for the doctor performing them, only to be mysteriously removed after Republicans on the Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee got called out for it last week.

Texas Democratic Party Spokesperson Brittany Switzer issued the following statement:

“Healthcare is a right and women should not be threatened with death row for exercising that right.

“Vulnerable Republicans, like Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee Chair Jeff Leach, Representative Morgan Meyer, and Representative Tony Tinderholt, should listen to women, doctors, and healthcare leaders when they cast their votes in committees. The eyes of Texas are upon them.

“Abortion care is healthcare. Texas Democrats will always fight back against Republican attempts to take away access to quality affordable healthcare. The right to an abortion should not solely exist on paper, it must be accessible and available for all.”
