John Cornyn Continues to Force Texans to Choose Between their Right to Vote and the Health of their Families

Cornyn Dismisses Vote By Mail Expansion, Would Have Texans Risk Their Lives to Vote During a Pandemic

Austin, TX —  This week in an interview with Fox San Antonio, Cornyn dismissed Texans’ right to expanded vote by mail: “[t]he truth is, we don’t have the infrastructure in place, right now, to accommodate universal mail-in ballots and there are some fraud concerns.”

Cornyn’s opposition to allowing all Texans to vote by mail remains adamant despite the fact that voters support such measures by a two-to-one margin.

Wednesday’s interview was the latest example of Sen. Cornyn’s blatant disregard for the health and safety of Texas voters. Previously, Sen. Cornyn recklessly insisted, “if you can go to the grocery stores you can go to the polls.”

Texas’ voting system already suppresses votes from marginalized communities and first-time voters through shortages of election resources, causing unconscionably long lines.

Instead of working to fix these challenges and expand common-sense vote by mail, Cornyn chooses to play politics with Texan’s lives and constitutional rights.

Texas Democratic Party Cornyn War Room Spokesperson Billy Begala issued the following statement:

“In the midst of this unprecedented public health crisis, we need our leaders to take decisive action now to help ensure Texans can exercise their constitutionally-guaranteed right to vote in a safe manner. Instead, John Cornyn is ignoring the desires of the vast majority of Texans in order to play political games with the health, safety, and lives of his constituents. It’s time Texans have a senator who puts them first.”
