Texas COVID-19 vaccination progress is no thanks to Republicans, who universally voted against the COVID-19 relief and vaccination funding
AUSTIN, Texas — As the Houston Chronicle reported today, one in three Texas adults has now received at least the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine — thanks to President Biden’s aggressive expansion of vaccine access through the American Rescue Plan.
In less than a hundred days in office, President Biden and Vice President Harris have gotten real traction on containing the COVID-19 pandemic and keeping Americans safe. They kept their promise to get 100 million Americans vaccinated — 42 days earlier than their original goal date — and, thanks to American Rescue Plan vaccination funding, every adult in Texas became eligible to get the vaccine earlier this week.
While countless Texas families are seeing a light at the end of the tunnel thanks to these successes, every Republican in Congress voted against this crucial relief and vaccine funding — including all Texas Republican members of the U.S. House and disgraced Texas Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz. Meanwhile, Black and Latino communities are still vastly underrepresented in vaccine access because of Texas Republicans’ mismanaged vaccine rollout and Governor Abbott’s refusal to prioritize communities of color in vaccine distribution.
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“Texas Democrats are celebrating the news that thanks to President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, one out of three Texas adults has received at least the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. We’ve come a very long way — in a very short time — towards beating back this pandemic, and that’s thanks to President Biden and our Democratic champions in Congress.
“While Texas families are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, every single Texas Republican in Congress voted against this funding, against greater vaccine availability, and against protecting the lives and livelihoods of Texans. When we finally beat back this pandemic, it will be thanks to the Democratic leaders who put the lives and livelihoods of Americans first.”
