ICYMI: Texas Democrats Slam Trump’s Failure of Leadership As He Tries to Distract From Botched Pandemic Response

Austin, TX – As Donald Trump arrived in Midland-Odessa for a photo op and high-dollar fundraiser, Texas Democrats spoke out to set the record straight on Trump and Governor Abbott’s failed pandemic response and its devastating impact on Texas communities.

Texas is currently one of the biggest coronavirus hotspots in the nation, with hospitals facing a ‘tsunami’ of patients and severe staff shortages, and some even being forced to pick and choose between who lives and who dies. Last week, one Texan died every six minutes from the coronavirus.

KJTV: “Texas Democrats didn’t pull punches on their response to the President’s visit. They focused squarely on his response to the coronavirus. Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia says the federal support for testing is lip service to the real need […] The Democratic Party of Texas claims both the President and Governor have failed Texans. It notes last week, one Texan died from COVID-19 every six minutes.”

KXAN: “Texas Democrats criticized the President’s visit during the COVID-19 pandemic. ‘The state of Texas is a hotspot, and why? Because this president together with our governor have failed us,’ Rep. Sylvia Garcia said Wednesday.”

Dallas Morning News: “Democrats accused [Trump] of trying to shift attention from the pandemic, for which he receives low approval ratings in Texas and nationwide […] ‘They’re more concerned about covering up their failures than they are about covering up their faces with a mask,’ said Rep. Sylvia Garcia, a Houston Democrat, referring to Trump and Abbott in particular.”

CBS7: “Ahead of President Trump’s trip to Odessa and Midland today, the Democratic National Committee launched a daylong digital advertising campaign on the Odessa American’s homepage. The bright orange ads scattered up and down the newspaper’s website call out the President’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, calling it catastrophic. ‘Donald Trump can’t spin the devastating consequences of his failed pandemic response with another photo op,’ said DNC Chair Tom Perez.”

Texas Tribune: “The Democratic National Committee also denounced Trump’s handling of the virus with a daylong digital advertising campaign on the Odessa American’s homepage. The Texas Democratic Party held a news conference ahead of Trump’s visit to highlight how the pandemic has disproportionately impacted Latino Texans.”

KVUE: “‘They’re more concerned about trying to cover up their failures than they are about covering up their faces with a mask,’ said U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-Texas). ‘There’s still about one half of the cases in Texas, the deaths are happening in nursing homes. Why haven’t we figured that out?’ she added. ‘The first cases were at nursing homes. By now we should have a better plan for taking care of this.’”

Austin American Statesman: “But on Wednesday, the Texas Democratic Party seized on the new numbers to tie the governor to President Donald Trump, who were together in West Texas on Wednesday as Trump toured oil facilities and attended a fundraiser. ‘In Texas, the coronavirus is now out of control,’ state Democratic party spokesman Abhi Rahman said. ‘Instead of following the advice of doctors and experts, Donald Trump and Greg Abbott tried to discredit them to appease their right-wing lobbyist, donors, and base, even things as simple as wearing a mask. This is emblematic of the modern-day Republican Party: putting the pursuit of power over science and logic.’”

KXAN: “Texas Democrat Lloyd Doggett says the trip is pure politics. ‘I expect he has been looking at the polls — despite what anyone says — and he sees that even in Texas he is a little behind and eager to compete what I think is going to be a true battleground state this fall,’ said Doggett.”

Midland Reporter-Telegram: “Abhi Rahman, communications director for the Texas Democratic Party, said it was dangerous for Trump to hold events in Texas while coronavirus cases continue to spike, but it’s not surprising. ‘It’s completely reckless,’ he said. ‘It shows where Donald Trump’s priorities lie.’ Rahman speculated Trump is visiting West Texas because of fear he’s losing ground amid frustrations surrounding the pandemic, in a state that supported U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz during the 2016 primaries.”

Gray DC: “In 2020, Rahman says Texas could emerge as a battleground state and energy policy is likely a tipping point. ‘Trump is cratering here in Texas, he knows it,’ said Rahman. ‘That’s why he’s visiting Texas on Wednesday.’”

NBC5: “‘The reality is that he has been coming so many times over the past two years in particular, and yet his poll numbers continue to drop,’ said Manny Garcia, executive director of the Texas Democratic Party. Texas Democrats believe that the state is in play in the general election and that there will be the resources necessary to flip it.”

Dallas Morning News: “‘Three polls in a row show Joe Biden ahead of Donald Trump’ in Texas, said Texas Democratic Party spokesman Abhi Rahman. ‘Trump has visited Texas more times than any other state in the country besides Florida…. Trump is spending more in Texas on Facebook ads than nearly any other state in the country. False bravado only works when there is a modicum of truth to it. Stepien can laugh all he wants, Biden is going to beat Trump in Texas in November.’”

FOX24: “Former U.S. Representative Beto O’Rourke states Trump is in trouble. ‘I think that’s why you see him coming to the Permian Basin this week. I think he’s trying to shore up support in Texas,’ says O’Rourke. ‘Texas is in play and Texas’ 38 electoral college votes can be won by the Democratic nominee.’”

The Hill: “‘Instead of following the advice of doctors and experts, Donald Trump and Greg Abbott tried to discredit them to appease their right-wing lobbyist, donors, and base, even things as simple as wearing a mask,’ he said. ‘This is emblematic of the modern-day Republican Party: putting the pursuit of power over science and logic.’”

The National: “Abhi Rahman, a communications director for the Texas Democrats, said changing demographics in the state, the Republican leadership’s response to the coronavirus pandemic and a ‘general disdain for Trump” are changing the way Texans plan to vote.

‘There’s really never been a better time to be a Texas Democrat,’ he told The National. ‘We think we are going to win across the state in November.’”

Daily Mail: “‘’Texas is the biggest battleground state. Democrats continue to be the party of science while Trump and his Trump Republicans bury their heads in the sand while Texas’ coronavirus cases continue to get worse. From day one, Republicans like Donald Trump, Greg Abbott, and Louie Gohmert have downplayed and mismanaged this crisis, with deadly consequences in Texas and across the country. Joe Biden will defeat Donald Trump in Texas in November,’ said Texas Democratic Party spokesman Abhi Rahman.”

Washington Examiner: “Texas is the biggest battleground state,” Texas Democratic Party spokesman Abhi Rahman told the Washington Examiner. “Joe Biden is already showing his investment into Texas and his campaign will continue to invest throughout the election. With the national organizations, allied campaigns, Texas Democratic Party, and in-state partnered groups, we will have the resources to win up and down the ballot in November.”
