Austin, TX — This weekend, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi showed her commitment to turning Texas blue up and down the ballot in two separate conversations during the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin.
Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement:
“The polls confirm it: Texas is a key battleground state and focal point of our Democratic offensive strategy. A Democratic Texas House will protect the vision of our founders for our democracy — and reflect the beautiful diversity of the Lone Star State.”
First, in an interview with Evan Smith, Speaker Pelosi expanded on the importance of turning Texas blue.
“Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told a crowd Saturday that Texas is a top target for Democrats come 2020.”
“‘This is it,’ Pelosi said. ‘Texas is our hope for the future. And I’m not just talking about Democrats. I am talking about the country and the world. When Texas goes blue, that’s going to be very wholesome for our nation. It is a beautifully diverse state in every way.’”
“Her remarks follow those from Manny Garcia, executive director of the Texas Democratic Party, who told Hill.TV earlier this month that his state would be the top swing state in the nation in 2020.”
“‘Texas is the biggest battleground state in the country,’ he said. ‘We are dramatically changing, we’re changing quite rapidly.’”
“‘When you ask Texans if they would vote for Donald Trump or someone else, someone else currently wins,’ Garcia added.”
Next, Speaker Pelosi spent Sunday morning rallying Texas Democrats and expanding on the importance of flipping the Texas state house.
“The day after a public discussion at the Paramount Theatre focused on impeachment, the closing event of the weekend’s Texas Tribune Festival in downtown Austin, she attended the 7:30 a.m. Sunday Mass at St. Austin Catholic Church on Guadalupe Street. And then she went to the newly opened Hotel Zaza to rouse Texas Democrats and raise money for their effort to flip the Texas House in 2020 and elect a Democratic speaker in 2021.”
“Pelosi was introduced at breakfast by state Rep. Celia Israel, D-Austin, the new chairwoman of the Texas House Democratic Campaign Committee, charged with leading the effort to pick up the nine seats needed to flip the House.”
“‘I keep saying, if Texas turns blue… it sends hope across the country and across the world,’ Pelosi said.”
As Speaker Pelosi knows, Texas is the Biggest Battleground State.
