Dishonorable Ted Cruz Blocks Critical Voting Rights Bill As Assaults on Democracy Build Across The Nation and in Texas

AUSTIN, Texas — In the dead of night, moments before the Senate was set to dismiss until September, Sen. Ted Cruz pulled a stunt with dire consequences for the freedom to vote in Texas and across the country. His actions delayed a voting rights package aimed at protecting American citizens’ constitutional right to a fair elections process.

A group of Democratic senators led by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer spent the last few weeks working on a voting-focused version of S.1, For the People Act, in the hopes of passing it before the August recess. While the bill will likely be taken up again when Congress reconvenes, Sen. Cruz’s actions hold the door open for Texas Republicans to create deliberate barriers to voting, as they are trying to do at this very moment. The last-minute effort to bring forth the For the People Act for consideration was crushed at 4:30 a.m, when Sen. Cruz voted “no” to a unanimously-needed vote to pass the Senate.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“Ted Cruz had already proven to be an enemy to our democracy by inciting an insurrection, fleeing our state during the freeze, supporting bans on masks in Texas, voting against important funding for our state’s infrastructure, and now — he is blocking critical legislation that would make the promise of our democracy real for all of us. His actions are par for the course for Texas Republicans, who continue to put their own political ambition above doing what’s right for our state.

“We continue to call on Congress to pass meaningful legislation that protects our freedom to vote regardless of what state or neighborhood we live in or the color of our skin. Texas Democrats will not give up in this fight for Democracy.”
