Dan Patrick’s Coronavirus Remarks Are as Insulting as They Are Dangerous

Yesterday, Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick appeared on Fox News to assert that senior citizens are willing to die from the coronavirus in order to save the U.S. economy.

“No one reached out to me and said, ‘As a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for your children and grandchildren?’ And if that’s the exchange, I’m all in,” Patrick told Fox News’ Tucker Carlson.

It’s almost unfathomable that an elected official would ever openly admit to caring more about losing money than the health, safety, and lives of Texans, but alas, Dan Patrick crossed that line.

Not only do the people of Texas deserve better, but this coronavirus outbreak has proven just how little Republicans actually care about the American people.

Patrick was echoing the sentiments of President Trump, who has used the global pandemic to spew chaotic, uninformed messaging. The most corrupt president in U.S. history has shifted his focus onto the economy, by pushing the self-serving narrative that an economic collapse (under his watch), is worse than the coronavirus outbreak.

“Republicans are not here to protect you or your family. The only thing they are concerned about is enriching themselves and their stock portfolios. They would see our family members die to bail out wall street,” said Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa. “Texas Democrats believe healthcare is a human right. The lives of our families, our friends, and our communities have no dollar amount.”

The United States has yet to take measurable actions on the federal level to curb the coronavirus, and their attempts to undermine its severity is not only deceitful but also incredibly dangerous. On the statewide level, Governor Greg Abbott and Dan Patrick’s response to the pandemic has been slow and inefficient at best.

Our leaders should be protecting the lives of the American people at all costs, not the stock market.

“During times like this, we need moral leadership; leaders who are decisive and ready to turn advice into action for their community. Democratic officials in Texas are defining leadership during this unprecedented time,” said Texas Democratic Party Executive Director Manny Garcia. “They are protecting their communities, making smart decisions, and not sitting idly by as Republican state and federal officials put their head in the sand.”

Public health officials across the world are urging people to stay inside and take social distancing seriously. Unfortunately, in the United States, we have Republicans in power who would rather see people die than be blamed for the subsequent economic collapse.

Some of the greatest U.S. presidents have led the American people through some of the darkest periods in our history. FDR guided the country through the Great Depression. Lyndon B. Johnson arrived in New Orleans after Hurricane Betsy devastated the region and told those affected, “I am your president. I am here to make sure you have the help you need.” Despite the fear, and despite the uncertainty, Democratic leaders instilled hope and promise into the American psyche. In effect, they used their presidencies to guide Americans through the dark and into the light.

What we are witnessing is the furthest thing from leadership. The American people deserve to know the truth, and they deserve a president, a governor, a lieutenant governor, and every elected official in between, capable of taking action to keep them safe until this outbreak has been controlled.

Texas Democrats are fighting for that brighter future, for leaders who will expand healthcare and fight for paid sick leave. We’re fighting like we never have before because this Republican recklessness is unacceptable. Reason and logic should steer the government’s response to the global pandemic, not misinformation and selfishness.

Let’s change our future, and let’s elect the leadership we deserve.
