Cornyn Backs Budget Plan That Threatens Cuts To Medicare, Aid To Military Families After Voting For “Lopsided Giveaway To Corporations”

Austin, TX — Last night, Senator Cornyn voted for a reckless budget proposal that threatened to slash funding for programs Texans rely on, like Medicare, aid to farmers, and benefits for veterans and military families. But back in 2017, Cornyn voted for and helped pass the Republican tax law that added $1.5 trillion to the federal deficit in a “lopsided giveaway to corporations.” The budget plan was only supported by a fringe group of 22 Republican Senators, while an overwhelming majority of Senators in both parties voted against the controversial measure.

Texas Democratic Party Communications Director Abhi Rahman issued the following statement:

“Senator Cornyn had no problem giving billionaires and corporate special interests massive new tax breaks, but when it comes to the programs Texas families rely on — like Medicare, aid to farmers and students, and benefits for veterans and military families — he’s ready to go to the chopping block. These misplaced priorities show that Senator Cornyn has completely lost touch with hardworking Texans and cares more about pleasing his wealthy Washington campaign donors than fighting for his forgotten Texas constituents.

This budget betrayal is another example of Cornyn being out of touch with everyday Texans and will continue to be a reoccurring theme that haunts Senator Cornyn’s re-election campaign going into 2020.”
