Austin, TX — Republican President Donald Trump has announced the repeal of DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“Once again, Donald Trump has shown no heart. Many of our nation’s immigrant youth and their families are suffering in flood-ravaged Houston and all across the Texas Gulf Coast. Like their fellow Texans, immigrant youth are assembling cots, feeding their neighbors, and rebuilding their lives, city, and state. They are American in every sense of the word, and they damn sure are Texans.
“Donald Trump and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton have put lives at risk and created a problem where there was none. Americans overwhelmingly support the DACA program, yet Trump has chosen to break promises and use immigrant youth as political footballs.
“The very idea of the American Dream is at stake. Texas Democrats proudly stand with all immigrant youth, DREAMers and everyone who defends American values. We call for an immediate bipartisan congressional solution.”
“The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, was created by President Barack Obama in 2012. It gives unauthorized immigrants who came to the country as children a temporary, two-year relief from deportation and allows them to work legally in the country.” [Dallas Morning News, June 29, 2017]
