Texas’ Republican Leadership Continues to Lie, Spread Misinformation About the Coronavirus Pandemic
Bexar County GOP Chair Cynthia Brehm
Austin, TX — In yet another example of how Texas Republicans have mismanaged the coronavirus crisis from day one, Bexar County GOP Chairwoman Cynthia Brehm claimed that coronavirus was a hoax pushed by Democrats to hurt Trump’s re-election campaign.
During a rally Friday afternoon, Brehm declared that “[coronavirus] has been promulgated by the Democrats to undo all the good President Trump has done” and encouraged those in attendance to “take off your masks, exercise your constitutional rights. Stand up, speak up and vote Republican.” Brehm then ended her statements by hugging those in attendance.
She isn’t the only one. Perhaps Chair Brehm was taking her cues from Gov. Greg Abbott, who, earlier this week, was caught in a bald-faced lie about the state’s comingling of testing and has aggressively pushed for reopening the state against the guidelines of the CDC, White House, or the ones he even set at the beginning of the crisis.
Or perhaps she was following the lead of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who has suggested sacrificing the lives of elderly people to help the economy.
Or maybe her cavalier attitude can be attributed to Sen. John Cornyn who has downplayed the severity of this crisis from day one— which began with a now-infamous mocking tweet of a Corona beer.
From top to bottom, Texas Republican leaders continue to downplay and mismanage the coronavirus crisis. Texans continue to suffer because of their lack of leadership.
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“Texas already ranks first in the nation in coronavirus spread. Simply put, comments like the ones Chairwoman Brehm made will kill more Texans. Encouraging Texans to remove their masks and ignore the fatal consequences of this pandemic will jeopardize the health and wellbeing of all of us.
“Brehm’s comments are just the next iteration in a long line of Republicans not taking the coronavirus crisis seriously. Since the start of this pandemic, Texas’ Republican leadership has downplayed, lied, and mismanaged this crisis.”
