Breaking: Federal Court Confirms Texas Republicans Discriminated in State House Redistricting, Again.

Austin, TX– The San Antonio federal district court has again ruled that Texas Republicans intentionally discriminated against people of color in redistricting. The Republican-led Texas Legislature violated the U.S. Constitution and federal Voting Rights Act.

The Court said, “[a]s explained in the Order on Plan C235, the Legislature in 2013 purposefully maintained the intentional discrimination in Plan H283. Thus, violations found by this Court in its Order on Plan H283 and not sufficiently altered in Plan H358 now require a remedy, including specifically in Bell County, Dallas County, Nueces County, and Tarrant County.” (p.80)

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“Once again, Texas Republicans didn’t just cheat to win a silly game, they used Jim Crow-era tactics to rig our election system. Make no mistake, Republicans have stolen the voice of Texans at the ballot box for years.

“Today’s decision is a historic victory for the sacred voting rights of all Texans. The Texas Democratic Party is proud to stand with communities of color, civil rights leaders, and Democratic elected officials who fought hard for years to protect the voting rights of every single Texan.

“We look forward to legislative and congressional districts in 2018 that truly reflect the great diversity of our state. We have won this battle, but our fight is not over. We must do everything in our power to reform redistricting and expand every Texan’s right to vote.”
