Today, the Texas Signal and Texas Tribune reported that Governor Greg Abbott sent out a racist, anti-Latino, and anti-immigrant fundraising letter one day before the white supremacist terror attack that left 22 people dead and 24 people injured in El Paso.
‘If we’re going to DEFEND Texas, we’ll need to take matters into our own hands.’ In the following sentence, the governor cites statistics of undocumented immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border….Later in the letter, he asks recipients to sign a statement of support to “DEFEND TEXAS NOW.” – Lowlights from the fundraising letter, via the Texas Signal
More lowlights and analysis from the Texas Tribune:
“In a two-page fundraising mailer dated Aug. 2 — a day before the El Paso massacre — Abbott spoke in alarmist terms about the need to ‘DEFEND’ Texas at the border, cautioning the supposed political implications that could come with unchecked illegal immigration.”
“‘The national Democrat machine has made no secret of the fact that it hopes to ‘turn Texas blue.’ If they can do it in California, they can do it in Texas — if we let them,’ Abbott wrote in the fundraising appeal, which was obtained by The Texas Tribune.”
“Though only U.S. citizens can vote, the governor signed off with another pointed warning: ‘Unless you and I want liberals to succeed in their plan to transform Texas — and our entire country — through illegal immigration, this is a message we MUST send.”
Despicable doesn’t even begin to describe Governor Abbott’s racist, anti-Latino, anti-immigrant letter sent one day before the El Paso shooting. There is no difference between Donald Trump and Governor Greg Abbott’s toxic rhetoric of racial grievance. This kind of rhetoric fueled the hatred of a terrorist who drove ten hours to murder members of the Latino community.
This is not a game. It’s long past time for Republicans to eradicate white supremacist language from their discourse – people are dying.
