The status quo is deadly. Gun violence and hate have reached epidemic proportions in our state and in our country. The rise of white supremacy and Texas’ reckless gun laws have put us all in danger. So many lives have been lost in Sutherland Springs, Santa Fe High School, El Paso, and West Texas, and every day there are more deaths because a firearm was too easily accessible to the wrong hands.
Now more than ever, mass shootings have become all too common on the nightly news. Every day, racists are emboldened as the man in the White House spews hateful rhetoric. The toll of gun violence and hate is intolerable.
We need more than thoughts and prayers, we need policy and change. That’s why our Democratic elected officials in the Texas Legislature called for a special session this morning to pass common-sense laws to prevent mass shootings and acts of hate. We have now had four devastating mass shootings in the state of Texas in the last 18 months, and two in less than a month.
We need change now. That’s why Texas Democrats are calling for an emergency special session on comprehensive universal background checks, ending open carry laws, banning high capacity magazines, keeping weapons of war off our streets, and passing red flag laws so that we keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people.
Even before these tragic mass shootings, 78% of Texas voters demanded action on comprehensive universal background checks, 72% of Texas voters support passing red flag laws so that we keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, and a majority of Texas voters wants to keep weapons of war off our streets.
Every Texan should be free to walk outside, go to church, go to school, and go shopping without the fear of gun violence.
We know that progress is possible and momentum is on our side.
Enough is enough.
